Digital Fundraising for Toronto Not-for-Profits: Building Year-Round Donor Acquisition
Galas and year-end appeals can't carry a charity alone. Here is how Toronto not-for-profits build a digital fundraising engine that brings in new donors every month.

Most Toronto not-for-profits raise the bulk of their money in a few short windows: the annual gala, Giving Tuesday and the December appeal. When one of those underperforms, the whole year feels it. Digital fundraising fixes that by bringing in new donors every month, not just every season.
Why seasonal fundraising leaves charities exposed
Event-led fundraising depends on the same circle of supporters showing up again and again. That circle gets tired, and in a city as crowded with causes as Toronto, your donors are hearing from dozens of other organisations at the same time. A digital fundraising strategy widens the circle: it reaches people who care about your cause but have never heard your name.
The four parts of a digital donor acquisition engine
1. A donation page built to convert
Before spending a dollar on ads, fix the page people land on. Keep the form short, show one clear suggested gift, offer monthly giving as the default option, and explain in one sentence what the donation does. Most lost donations happen on the page, not in the ad.
2. Google Ad Grants, used properly
Eligible registered charities can access Google Ad Grants, which provides free search advertising each month. Many Canadian charities sign up and then leave it running on generic keywords. Point it at specific, local searches instead — for example "volunteer opportunities Toronto", "donate to food bank Toronto" or the issue your organisation works on — and send each search to a page that answers it.
3. Paid social that tells the story
Meta and other social platforms are where people discover causes they did not know they cared about. The ads that work are rarely polished brand videos. They are specific: one person, one problem, one outcome your work made possible. Test several stories, keep the ones that bring in donors, and retarget people who watched but did not give.
4. Email that welcomes, not just asks
A first-time donor who only hears from you when you need money rarely gives twice. Build a short welcome series that shows where their gift went, introduces the people behind the mission and invites them to give monthly once trust is there.
What to measure
- Cost per new donor by channel, not just clicks or impressions
- Donation page conversion rate
- Share of new donors choosing monthly giving
- Second-gift rate within 90 days
Start small, then scale what works
You do not need a large budget to begin. Fix the donation page, put your Ad Grants to work on local searches, and test a small paid social budget with two or three real stories. Once you know your cost per new donor, you can grow with confidence instead of hoping the next gala carries the year.
