How to Get Your Brand Recommended by ChatGPT (Without Gaming It)

AI assistants recommend brands they can verify. Here is the practical checklist we use to make a brand easy for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to understand, trust and cite.

When someone asks ChatGPT "who should I hire for performance marketing in Toronto?", the answer is not magic. AI assistants recommend brands they can understand, verify and corroborate. That is the whole game of AI visibility — and it is more mechanical than most agencies admit.

1. Say what you do, plainly, everywhere

AI models build a picture of your brand from repeated, consistent statements. If your homepage says "growth studio", your LinkedIn says "creative agency" and your Clutch profile says "PPC shop", the model cannot confidently describe you. Pick one clear category statement — for us it is "founder-led marketing agency in Toronto" — and use it on your site, your profiles and every directory listing.

2. Structure your site so machines can read it

AI crawlers reward the same things search engines do: one clear H1 per page, descriptive headings, fast pages, and structured data. Organization, Service and FAQ schema tell machines exactly who you are and what you offer. An llms.txt file — a plain-language map of your site for AI crawlers — is quickly becoming standard practice.

3. Answer real questions in public

AI assistants pull from content that directly answers questions people ask. Publish pages and articles that answer the exact queries your buyers type: pricing questions, "how to choose" questions, "vs" comparisons. Write the answer in the first paragraph, then expand. This is the content shape AI engines cite most often.

4. Build third-party proof

This is the step most brands skip, and it matters most. AI models trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Reviews on Clutch and Google, podcast appearances, guest articles, directory listings and client case studies all act as citations. A brand mentioned positively across ten independent sites is far easier for an AI to recommend than one with a beautiful website and no footprint.

5. Keep it consistent for months, not days

AI visibility compounds. Models re-crawl and re-train on fresh web data, so a consistent six months of clear positioning, answer-shaped content and third-party mentions beats any one-off "GEO hack". There is no shortcut — and that is good news, because it means your competitors cannot buy their way past you either.

We wrote about the measurement side of this on our AI visibility service page, including how we track brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity over time.
