Why SaaS Founders Should Write Their First Ten Posts Themselves

Early SaaS content fails when it sounds like marketing. The fix is not a better writer — it is the founder's own voice, captured before anyone polishes it away.

Most early SaaS content reads like it was written by someone who has never used the product or talked to a customer. Usually, it was. The founder has the context — why the product exists, what customers actually struggle with, which objections come up on every sales call — and that context is the entire substance of good early content.

Your sales calls are your content calendar

Record your next ten demos or discovery calls (with permission). Every question a prospect asks is an article. "How is this different from X?" is a comparison post. "We tried Y and it didn't work" is a failure-modes post. "What does implementation look like?" is an onboarding post. Ten calls will give you more validated topics than any keyword tool.

Write the ugly first draft yourself

You do not need to be a writer. Talk through the answer out loud, transcribe it, and clean it up. What matters is that the specifics survive: the real numbers, the real customer language, the opinion you actually hold. A writer or agency can edit, structure and optimize — but they cannot invent your conviction, and readers can tell the difference.

Opinionated beats comprehensive

A 700-word post that takes a clear position ("most onboarding checklists measure the wrong thing") will outperform a 3,000-word "ultimate guide" that says nothing. Early-stage content wins on point of view, not word count. You can write the definitive guides later, when you have the domain authority to rank them.

When to hand it off

Hand content to a team or agency when two things are true: you have a documented voice and point of view they can follow, and the topics coming from sales calls exceed what you can write yourself. Until then, the founder writing the first ten posts is not a compromise — it is the strategy. Our content strategy work with SaaS brands usually starts by extracting exactly this founder knowledge into a repeatable system.
